Meticulously crafted and perfectly scored, Julie 2 is a domestic drama written by Jean Renoir, one of the most respected filmmakers of all time. The film is a study in the struggles of relationships between parents and children, as well as a meditation on duty, love and guilt. It has been universally adored since its release in 1937, but its relevance is stronger than ever today. This movie cover every possible emotion one can think of; regret for what we've done; happiness with what we have now; and determination to reach our goals despite the obstacles set before us. Julie, a beautiful young woman working as a maid, lives with her widowed father, who was once a cellist. Their idyllic home is pleasantly decorated with Julie's artwork. When Julie's parents are invited to France for their son-in-law's engagement party to be held at the Paris Opera House, Julie is upset that she must give up her coveted job as a maid to stay behind. Her father consents to her request if she agrees to take care of the house instead of them going out to celebrate. It doesn't take long before things go awry. The party is a disaster, and Julie's father is overcome with guilt for the missed opportunity. When they return home, Julie's father makes a surprise announcement: he is leaving next morning on a fishing trip to Bordeaux. In the meantime, Julie has been helping her mother prepare for their upcoming trip to Paris. Her mother announces that she intends to give her a stylish new wardrobe, in preparation for the party at the Opera House. Julie's father arrives home unexpectedly one night and mistakes what she was doing in her room as trying on clothes. When he finds out that she was actually doing penance, he is amazed by her unselfishness and agrees to let her go to Paris as well as giving her some money to spend. The plan backfires when Julie arrives at the Opera House and finds no one there except for a couple of men dressed as officers who are on duty. She returns home, disappointed. Her father soon arrives, but after an argument about Julie's birth certificate and how they missed their chance of going to Paris, they end up reconciling and making love. They go to sleep and wake up the next morning. They go to the train station and board the train without realizing that they left their tickets in the house. Julie and her father arrive in Bordeaux and buy a boat for fishing out at sea. They set off and catch dinner in exchange for a portion of what they've caught. The fishing doesn't go so well, so Julie's father decides to return home. He gets off the boat near their house, but his daughter is nowhere in sight. Without her knowledge, he looks into her bedroom window and sees that she is there, looking at him through the window. They slowly realize that they're both invisible to one another, even though when they look at each other's eyes when talking, their lips are clearly visible.
